“Irini Sonata” was especially written for the Diabelli Competition. It is a single movement Sonata that can be regarded as monothematic, since both the first and second themes are based on the rhythmical structure given by the Greek word IRINI (PEACE) set up in Morse code. In the connecting sections the letters S.O.S. also appear in Morse code.
The first theme, although based on the word IRINI, is rather forceful and aggressive. The second theme is calm, but not completely relaxed. Peace is not a gift; peace is the result of many things such as justice, love, liberty, equality, fraternity, welfare, respect… All are things we have to work for, and if needed, struggle for. As Martin Luther King said: “Peace is not the absence of conflict or tension: it is the presence of justice”, and in the words of Pope Paul VI: "If you want Peace, work for Justice".
The Sonata is not intended to be programmatic, and interpretations are free. However, the images that the composer tries to convey can be described as follows:
EXPOSITION
Main theme: conflict, chaos, anomy,
Transition: call for help (S.O.S), faith
Secondary theme: anguish, tense calm, nostalgia.
DEVELOPEMENT
Turmoil, stress, struggle, romantic heroism, innocence, hope,
RECAPITULATION
Recapitulation main theme: violence, distress, strain
Transition: call for help (S.O.S), justice, faith
Recapitulation secondary theme: relief, calmness, tranquility, nostalgia.
Coda: time flow, eternity, peace.
