The theme
The Morse code represents the modern Greek word "irini". The word means "peace" and was chosen to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII in 2015. The different tone pitches in the illustration are not meant as a requirement, they merely stand for the different letters of the code. As in the actual Morse code, the "letters” may also be evenly separated by pauses.
The composers were given complete freedom of choice with regard to harmony and melody.
The prerequisites for a competitive entry were:
The theme must be clearly identifiable
The variation must be between 6 and 8 minutes long
The music must be written for piano (two hands).
The final concert took place at the "Münchner Künslerhaus", the main sponsor of the event.

Born in Mexico City, he starts to discover his musical skills with the guitar under his parent’s guidance, deciding to follow piano studies. Due to his disposition, dedication and interest in this instrument, the eminent pianist and professor José Antonio Morales accepted to direct his pianos studies since 1995, being one of his best students. In the summer of 1997 he was selected to participate in the Music Performances at Manhattan, California. From there on he has performed in various stages.
In the fall of 2000 he relocates to Toronto to continue his professional studies and is accepted at “The Glenn School of Music of the Royal Conservatory of Music” working with Professor Marietta Orlov. The following year he enters the Music Faculty of the University of Toronto in where he has the opportunity to work with great artists such as Boris Lysenco, Lorand Fenyves and with the excellent composer Alexander Rapoport. In the spring of 2005 the University of Toronto grants him the “Bachelor of Music in Performance” degree.
After his encounter with the Canadian composer Alexander Rapoport in September of 2004, he becomes interested in composing. Among his works we have the collection “Miniatures” for piano solo and the “Preludes GCBH” for guitar. The “Mexican Guitar Trio” has recorded his “Mexican Fantasia” and his “Minuet and Rondo over themes by Diabelly” in their CD entitled “una Fantasía Mexicana” (a Mexican Fantasy)
He has released two recordings: one with works by “Beethoven and Chopin” and “entre España y América” (between Spain and America) with works by Albeniz, Villa-Lobos, and Rapoport. “Publicaciones y Accesorios MGM” has published all 7 notebooks of his collection “Miniatures”.
Various audiences have agreed on his refined execution of authors such as Albéniz, Brahms, Villa-Lobos, Schubert, Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart, Pepin, Rapoport, Schumann, Bach and Scarlatti among others.

Even as a child, Yojo impressed people by his extraordinary musicality. Since age five, he has had regular piano lessons with Franz Hummel, who also teaches composition to Yojo. As early as at age eight, Yojo started doing full-length piano recitals on his own.
The 18-year old pianist plays concerts all over Germany and has even performed in radio programs and on TV. In 2010, Yojo was invited by the German-Japanese Society to do a tour through Japan where he played seven concerts. After the initial recital in Kobe, a busload of fans followed him on the remaining tour which turned out to be a stunning success for the then 14-year old.
Besides classical and romantic piano works, Yojo’s repertoire also comprises a large number of original pieces, including a virtuosic “Train Etude” as well as a series of preludes. His greatest success to date has been his First Piano Sonata titled “Die Zwitschermaschine” (Twittering Machine). To commemorate the victims of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, he composed a “requiem” that premiered in September 2011 at a charity concert in Füssen. The proceeds from the event were donated to the city of Fukushima. Currently Yojo is working on his first opera.
Together with Franz Hummel, the versatile young artist has released a beginner’s piano tutor book called “Mein wildes Klavierbuch” (The Wild Piano Book). Yojo composed the performance pieces and exercises that reflect his own musical education and the way he learned to play the piano.
The first two CDs that Yojo recorded for TYXart at age 15 and 17, respectively, have been met with great attention on a national level. His recent, third CD titled “Atavistic Music“ was recorded by Yojo together with the cello professor Alexander Suleiman. On the CD, the two musicians improvise on 13 subjects, creating the music from scratch and taking the titles as a source for inspiration.

Mokrus, Andy
While still a small child, Andy Mokrus started playing all different kinds of music on the piano strictly by ear.
Having gone through the usual classical piano training in the 1970s, much of his time in the 80s was spent playing jazz and rock music with his bandmates.
During study trips he got in touch with the fascinating musical cultures of Africa, South America and Eastern Europe. He learned improving in the most common musical styles and was inspired to compose his own music where he frequently blends elements taken from different cultures.
Mokrus conceived his first program of music while being a student at the Hanover University of Music and Drama. The compositions written for the jazz-rock band PAIA were awarded the “Niedersächsischer Jazzpreis” in 1998.
This was followed by acoustic jazz projects, solo piano music influenced by classical music, and two programs of chansons that yielded a cultural award for him and his partner Traute Römisch in 2006.
In two collaborations with classical orchestras Mokrus again tried combining different musical genres. On 31 December 1999, he improvised with the Bamberg Symphony, performing a piece titled “Letzte Uraufführung des Jahrtausends”. His first concerto for piano and orchestra premiered in February 2005 with the Collegium Musicum.
A commission from the Church of Hanover in 2002/03 resulted in his writing a suite of 18 variations for jazz band (optionally with choir). The piece fuses jazz music with elements from contemporary classical music and was performed, for instance, at the “Festival der europäischen Kirchenmusik” in Schwäbisch Gmünd in 2004. The following year, the composition and the corresponding CD “Impressions En Suite” were awarded the “Jazzpreis des Landes Niedersachsen”.
As part of a work grant received from the federal state of Lower-Saxony, Mokrus in 2006-2007 wrote a piece for improvised piano and symphonic orchestra that takes up Eastern European musical traditions.
In a work commissioned by the “Jazz Art Niedersachsen” project, Mokrus combined chamber music with various improvisational forms, using a string quartet, vibraphone, piano and one wind player. The piece was performed in 15 concerts as part of the “JazzArt” Biennale and was broadcast by Norddeutscher Rundfunk in 2012.
For the opening of a permanent exhibition at Schloss Agathenburg, Mokrus wrote his “Kleine Barock Suite” for saxophone, double bass and piano (2011) where he combines the structure of a Bach suite with jazz sounds and improvisations.
Mokrus‘ „Code Irini“, which he wrote for the 2014 Diabelli Contest, blends techniques from minimal music with sounds associated with modern classical music.

It is an “undefined” type of music, yet strongly rooted with the identity and history of its people. In Olano’s words, “There is no art that isn’t political or is without an ideology; my music plows through those waters… If there is nothing to say as political subjects, who are affected by the development of history, it’s better to say nothing, then.”
He has received several prized an accolades for his work in musical composition, among which are the selection made by Greg Patillo (Project Trio), the piece “Vermouth with fries” (flute, cello and double bass) and the Diabelli International Composer Contest, reaching the final stage among 125 composers of different countries with his piece “Elisión”, premiered in April 2015 in Munich (Germany) at the Münchner Künstlerhaus.
During 2015 and 2016, his pieces were premiered in Argentina, South Africa, Germany, France, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and the United States.
Three of his pieces have been shown in Művelődési Szint (Müszi), Budapest, Hungary, in the Music after the end of music cycle, organized by Conceptual Soundproductions Budapest: “The nobodies” for 4 to 16 singers/performers, "Waiting Room" for a saxophone duo, and "Keep the change" for flute, bass trombone and percussion.
His latest premieres were at the University Of Tennessee (Knoxville, Tennessee) with his piece “Milongazo”, for tuba and violin, interpreted by Kenyon Wilson and Marcy J. Wilson at the International Tuba & Euphonium Association Conference at the University of Tennessee and in Bourdeaux (France) of "तुलसी" for flute, bansuri and mandolin, interpreted by Etienne Rolin and Vincent Beer-Demander.
He has composed pieces for soloists, choirs, ensembles and symphony orchestra. Among them, “Chakra”, was premiered at Teatro Argentino in La Plata, together with composers from Brazil, Spain, Mexico and Portugal, in the context of “III Encuentro Internacional de Producción Artística en Formato Digital”. Born December 12, 1944, I grew up in Berlin. After having completed law school, I worked as a lawyer for many years but have retired by now. I’ve played music for a hobby (starting with clarinet and saxophone, then adding percussion, with jazz music as a focus) ever since attending school. Wrote my first compositions while still at school (one of my tunes titled “Lucky Chance” was recorded by pianist Eugen Cicero at that time). During my professional career, I didn’t spend that much time on my hobby. I’ve always loved music, though, and since I retired I’ve resumed composing my own music (and writing arrangements for music school bands). Some of my pieces have even been played at public performances in recent years. Still, music is “simply” a hobby to me.

is a concert pianist and composer. Her concerts captivate through the particularly original and charming way she presents her performances. The artist herself arouses the interest and curiosity of her audience in the works she is about to play with an informative introduction. Besides the classical repertoire and the music of her native country, Brazil, she plays also her own compositions in concert. Today composition is the main focus of her work.
Born in Porto Alegre in southern Brazil, she completed her piano studies with Dirce Knijnik and Norma Bojunga. Passing her final examinations with distinction, she was awarded a grant by the government of Brazil to continue her studies in Germany. This she did at the "State Academy for Music" in Karlsruhe, under Kalle Randalu and Michael Uhde.
While still studying she took part in master classes and music festivals in both Europe and South America together with pianists such as Bruno Canino, Rudolph Kehrer, Roberto Szidon, Lev Vlasenko, Homero Magalhaes, Dinorah Varsi, Miguel Proença and others, which greatly deepened and extended the breadth of her vision of music.
Iara Behs's career as a pianist has already been crowned with a great deal of success. She won first prize in the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra's "Competition for Young Soloists" and was named the "best interpreter of Brazilian music" in a piano competition held by the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. Her activity as a concert pianist has seen her perform in Brazil and in many countries of Europe where she also performed as a soloist with well-known orchestras conducted by Zygmunt Rychert, Arlindo Teixeira, Nestor Wennholz, Alexandru Lascae, Petr Vronsky and others. She has also made recordings for radio and appeared on television.
Iara lives in Germany with her husband and daughter.

Drewes, Michael
Michael Drewes was born and raised in Germany and moved with his family to Mexico City at age fourteen, where he lived for twenty-six years. His youthful interests centered on drawing, sculpting and designing buildings. He received his Bachelors degree in Architecture and his Masters in Art History from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and his Ph. D. in Architectural History from the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany.
<br><br>
Drewes became curious about music in his mid-teens and learned to play the cello in school at that time. It was his only formal music training. Most musical knowledge was self-taught, sometimes under the guidance of experts.
<br><br>
As he started college, his mild interest became more intense, and he studied music theory, harmony and composing on his own. Musical ideas began to come to him, and he would write them down, sometimes with the aid of a neighbor's piano, and sometimes right from his head to paper - even symphonies - which he never heard, since orchestral facilities were not within his reach. He started his career with Mexico's Monuments Office, supervising restoration of church organs.
<br><br>
He continued to compose music, and filled notebooks of unplayed works. In 1985 Drewes moved to Israel, inspiring him to create different and more modern sounds, although his signature style continued to be basic classical harmonies. After eleven years living in Jerusalem (1985-1996), where he earned his living as restoration expert at the archaeological dig in Beit She'an, he moved to Miami. Musical ideas continued non-stop, and he went on to write them down. He dreams of being able some day to make his music come alive and breathe.

1951:
Irmgard and Hans Opahle had been expelled from Silesia and were looking for a new homeland, when their second daughter, Eva-Maria, was born in Gelsenkirchen. Not much later the family moved to Karlsruhe, where Eva-Maria’s four brothers were born.
At Karlsruhe Conservatory Eva-Maria learned to play the recorder, violin, piano and church organ and was taught harmony. She started studying music education at the University of Music Freiburg but, realizing that educational aspects were rather neglected in the study course, decided to train as a “mathematisch technische Assistentin” (computer technician) and pursued music as a hobby.
Her own family, which had been the primary focus in her life for many years, produced three children (who are now adults) and the name Götte-Schmidt.
1991:
After her youngest daughter was born, Eva-Maria quit her job in computers and established a private music school in Gengenbach. She developed her singing and conducting skills in numerous courses and directed choirs for many years.
An extensive training course in rhythmics provided plenty of inspiration to her as she wished to be more creative musically. The training has also impacted her work as a teacher and composer.

"Composing and arranging is my inner need. I write my music as I previously imagined in my thoughts and refine them later on the piano. When composing, I rely entirely on my musical feeling and my ears, since I (unfortunately!) never had the opportunity to enjoy studying composition and had only a rough overview of the theory. Therefore, modern theoretical composition techniques and constructed music are foreign to me. My music is well structured, has melody and harmony and reflects feelings, atmosphere and content so that they the can capture listeners, without having to read a 100-page manuscript. "

Having enjoyed an excellent education in musical theory as a student, I began composing music around 1985. Since 1990, I’ve received an increasing number of commissions, so composing music has become my main activity besides teaching.
I’ve composed musical works in a number of fields, including musical theater, concert band and orchestra music, oratorio, chamber music, piano music, stage music, etc.
I would characterize my style as multifaceted, with a penchant for rhythmic finesse.

Pfaffenberger, Jürgen
Jürgen Pfaffenberger was born in Leipzig in January 1951. His interest in music was awakened when he was given a small accordion along with some music books. While still a child, he taught himself the basic skills for playing various types of accordions and bandoneons. In much the same way he acquired a substantial knowledge of reading and writing music. In the late 1960s he took part in an open competition for contemporary dance music held by the city of Leipzig where he was among the award winners.
While training to become a primary school teacher with music as a third subject, Pfaffenberger composed and arranged music that he played together with a group of fellow students at public performances. In his teaching job, he taught all grades right from the beginning. Besides that, he directed various choirs and an instrumental group at his school. His compositional work at that time consisted primarily of songs. The group participated in a number of concerts for schoolchildren where Hans Sandig’s “Besuch im Zoo” (A Visit to the Zoo) was performed.
From 1980, when he graduated from the conservatory as a certified music teacher, until his retirement in 2012 Pfaffenberger concentrated on his teaching job. While there was not much time left for composing he wrote various “Gebrauchsmusik“ pieces and contributed music to a number of children's theater projects.
In recent years, Pfaffenberger has started dedicating more of his time to composing, creating music for amateur theater groups and social dance clubs. As an exercise in orchestral composition, he wrote a symphonic piece in three movements. In 2013, he contributed leitmotif-based musical episodes for an adaptation of Charles Dickens‘ “A Christmas Carol”. In 2014, Pfaffenberger composed a cycle titled “Musikalische Geschichten” (Musical Tales). It comprises ten program music pieces (e.g. “A Picture”, “The Old Castle”, “Stranded”, …) for orchestra that are meant to catch the audience with sophisticated, fanciful music.

Born on June 22, 1962 as the oldest of five brothers and sisters, I grew up in a village near Kassel. After graduating from school I went to Mainz to study to become a teacher of music, and French. I lived in Paris for two and a half years following the “Erstes Staatsexamen” (state examination) and moved to Munich in February 1989 where I completed my studies with the “Zweites Staatsexamen” (1992). Since then, I have worked as a teacher at a Munich grammar school with a fine arts track.
As to my private life, I got married in 1992 and have two daughters (born 1995 and 1997). Took my maternity leave from 1995 to 2001. I broke up with my husband in October 2004 and got divorced in July 2007. My children have stayed with me and are now 17 and 19 years old.
On the subject of composing: In my teenage years I started creating my own music, mostly setting ballads to music and writing pieces for piano (and violin). Unfortunately, I had nobody to turn to for instruction. Later on as a teacher I’ve always tried to make up for what I thought was missing from music curriculums and encouraged students, both in my regular classes and elective courses, to compose their own music. The elective courses that I held for about ten years with different participants created four musicals that were performed to great success at our school. What was important to me was that all the participants involved in composing were given a chance to contribute their ideas. This helped me to learn a lot about the creative process and the changing musical tastes of young people. A great experience!

Since I was a child, I’ve been keen on (mostly classical) music. I play the violin and viola in various ensembles (orchestral and chamber music, with a special liking for string quartets). Over time, I’ve felt an increasing desire to learn more about the "composer’s trade", i.e. to compose my own music.
Over the years, I’ve devoted myself to musical composition by teaching myself (composition exercises using theory books by H. Grabner, W. Maler and others). I enjoy using the Finale and Capella programs to work on my compositions.
I’ve published more than 30 pieces on the MyOwnMusic internet portal, where my works have frequently been listed among the Top 10. To listen to my music on the internet, go to https://www.myownmusic.de and enter my pseudonym "theophil". Most of my pieces are listed in the “Classical” category, and in my understanding “classical” covers a wide variety of music.

Hans Uwe Strübing was born in Ravensburg in 1956. From an early age he played the organ at various churches. Starting in 1969, he also tried composing music. He didn’t take a straight course to music, though: only after he had completed his biology and pharmaceutics degree (1982) did he take up his music studies at the Nuremberg conservatory, studying composition with Gottfried Müller and Vivienne Olive.
The first time Strübing’s work was acknowledged on a national level was in 1985 when he received an award for his "Adventsmusik I, op. 2” at a composition contest held by several Berlin parishes. Since then, his works (in particular church music) have been performed at Bamberg Cathedral, St. Blaise's Cathedral (St. Blasien, Germany), St. Lawrence Church in Nuremberg and St. Matthew Church in Munich. In 1999 he won an award at the Günter Bialas Composition Contest for his "Der Traum von den fünf großen H" for flute, harp and piano.
Uwe Strübing incorporates many different aspects in his artistic work and, in doing so, pursues his own idea of contemporary classical music while also acknowledging recent trends. His work includes any genre of art music: besides church music (Stabat Mater, Magnificat, Mass), chamber and orchestral music (eight symphonies to date, including his 3rd Symphony "Bildnisse im Eis" that premiered in August 2000, as well as several concertos) he also composed a number of piano works (including four sonatas and three concertos), choral music and lieder as well as an opera titled "Aus der Welt" that is based on a novel by Jakob Wassermann (libretto by Rainer Fliege) and that was composed on the occasion of the Millenary of the city of Fürth where it premiered to great success in 2007. In addition, Uwe Strübing has written movie scores and music for computer games. His work has been captured in a number of CD and radio broadcast recordings.
Uwe Strübing about himself: “To me, music is the primary second language. I write music to express all those things that affect me beyond my day-to-day life. When I’m working with musical sounds it becomes very easy for me to express things that would take hours to be explained with words: music, to me, is the perfect medium to translate complex matters in a brief way.”

Martin Torp was born in Flensburg in 1957. While at school, he had piano, organ and cello lessons. After graduating from school and completing his civil service, he studied church music in Heidelberg. Basically self-taught in musical composition, he complemented his studies by taking private lessons with Gerhard Rosenfeld, an opera composer and student of Hanns Eisler.
Martin Torp has lived in Berlin as a freelancer since 1985. Alongside his compositional work he has worked as a concert organist and pianist, music teacher and publicist. He received a composition scholarship from the Fritz-Berg-Stiftung as well as numerous commissions; his symphonic cantata "Psalm 103" earned him an award at the "Göttinger Psalter 2012" competition. Torps' extensive body of work includes vocal works (a full-length oratorio, several cantatas, motets and lieder), orchestral and chamber music works as well as organ music and numerous piano works (a selection of which he recorded for the Hastedt CD label for release in 2009). Works by Torps have been published by Merseburger Verlag, Verlag Neue Musik, Edition 49 and Furore Verlag Kassel. For more information go to www.martintorp.de.

I am a physicist and was born in the mountain village of Mürren in the Bernese Oberland. In my job as an independent consultant I deal with environmental technology projects, my true passion; however, are the mountains and “classical” music (which, for me, includes anything from Bach to Brubeck).
Even as a child, I preferred tinkling away on my mum’s piano to practicing the violin. Of course, none of my early inventions has ever been recorded. This has changed with the advent of digital notation software (samples of my work can be found on YouTube).
Finally, let me add that I’m a granddad and that my grandparents like tinkling away on the piano, too.

At the age of 18, by a fortunate circumstance, I got an old upright piano from an aunt given. In the self-study I came quite quickly to my limits, which is why I signed up in 2009 in the music school St. Valentin and was informed by Mr Terzinsky in piano. In the summer of 2011, I visited the piano master class at the AMA Academy of Music in Altenburg, where I met Robert Lehrbaumer, which informs me to this day.
For a concert in January 2013 an orchestration of the piano piece "Memories of Mitzi" by David Neal Lewis was applied to me, which should be performed by the Lebanese Philharmonic. When working on the piece I created a paraphrase called "MZKA". This was my very first orchestral piece, which was first performed in the course of the concert in Beirut. Then there were two other performances of the play at the Academy of Music in Altenburg and the Castle concerts in Halbturner. 2014 I composed on behalf of Mag. Gertrud Stecher the piece "Rasmun" for viola and piano. This was premiered at INÖK and "prima la musica" competition of the young, talented violist Finn Dempsy.
I hear a lot of different music, let myself be inspired by classical, jazz, pop, rock and contemporary music and improvise on the piano a lot. I collect impressions and then try to find musical expressions. When I am patient and not expect anything it appears to be the best process of writing music. The collaboration with performers and their impressions, opinions and reviews make me better understand my music. The fact that someone else is preoccupied with my music and interprets it with devotion are the highlights as a composer for me so far.

Born in Ehingen/Donau in 1955, Wolfgang Weller started composing music at age nine and studied music at conservatories in Munich and Freiburg. He is a composer, concert pianist, originator and artistic director of the ÖPFINGER SCHLOSSKONZERTE concert series, piano teacher and head of a public music school. Weller especially dedicates himself to bringing art music to places other than the major centers of culture and fostering young talents in that area.
Besides lieder, choir and chamber music, his compositional work comprises numerous works for piano as well as for guitar and saxophone. His studies of ancient Greek musical theory have had a significant impact on some of his work. Manuscripts of his works are stored at the municipal archive in Ehingen, the manuscript archive of the Association of German Musicians (Deutscher Tonkünstlerverband), the Hölderlin Archive of the German Literature Archive in Marbach and in the archive of the Ulm Choral Society (Sängergau Ulm). I am closely connected to the classical organ music since my high school time. In Schaffhausen, the city of my youth, one of my esteemed teachers at the Münster gave me a first idea of the endless cosmos of the organ world. In those years, my fondness for the works of Johann Sebastian Bach emerged, which has not changed until today.
Since the early eighties I play regularly as a part-time church organist in various reformed congregations in my vicinity. Currently I work in a beautiful mountain church in the town of Rheinau - not far from the famous Rhine Falls.
In the early nineties I started to compose my own music for liturgical use. With the performance of a Good Friday Meditation - you can find several pieces here in Musicalion - I appeared on stage for the first time publically with a greater self-composition in 1998.
More recently, I transfer choral and orchestral works by Johann Sebastian Bach into organ versions and - if necessary - to a solo instrument. "Et incarnatus est" as an example - the beautiful set of the B minor Mass - also sounds very good as an arrangement for organ and oboe.
