IRINI AGAPI is my contribution to the Diabelli Contest 2014/2015.
The requested Morse code IRINI (…. _. … _. …) is already recognizable at the beginning and not only (in the “pause version”) a component of the topic, but also traverses further parts of the work, e.g. interludes measure 34 and 50, as well as two developments starting from measure 71 and 136. It is however not the only theme that is based on Morse code.
Since peace without love for fellow man and creatures cannot be fulfilled, the Greek word for “love” was selected: Old Greek - “Agape” (Αγάπη), New Greek - "Aghapi", simplifies AGAPI with the Morse code:
. _ __. . _ . __. ….
This theme resonates first in measure 37 in the left hand, also afterwards in measures 53 and 61, as well as in the reprise in measures 170 and 178. In addition, in the center section starting from measures 104 and 117 a twelve-tone sequence rings out twice, (which 13th tone is identical in each case to the 1st tone), which likewise is based on the AGAPI Morse code rhythm. The End-Maestoso both Morse code themes IRINI and AGAPI are formally united.
Today, (01 September 2014) - 75 years ago, World War II began. We dare not to forget the cost of war. Therefore, it is worthwhile to use each day for peace with music as well.
