The composition should contain an excerpt from the poem ''Orpheus.Eurydice.Hermes'' by Rainer Maria Rilke. In the poem, Orpheus leads his beloved Eurydice in the company of the God Hermes out of the underworld. The plan can only succeed if he doesn't turn around to her. Otherwise Eurydice will not be permitted to leave the underworld.
The sculptures appearing below by Antje Tesche-Mentzen should serve as a source of inspiration:
t should also be noted that Monteverdi in his opera ''Orfeo'' used a rhythm during the song ''Nehmt mich auf Ihren stillen Wälder'' which corresponds to the initials of Carl Orff ''CO'' in Morse code.
On the occassion of the renaming of the competition this is a fact which could be taken into account but is not obligatory.
The composer may choose freely with regard to the melody and harmony of the composition.

Stefan Esser was born April 25th, 1966 in Leverkusen, Germany. His main job is as codirector of a school for the mentally retarded in Leverkusen.
<br><br>
He has been active as pianist and composer since 1985. His works have been performed mostly in Leverkusen and the surrounding area, but also abroad. Some have been published in print. His compositions have recourse to traditional forms and are characterized by the thorough processing of themes, which develop partially from small "seminal motives"; the use of contrapuntal techniques, and the application of free tonal harmony.
<br><br>
His largest works are the symphonic impressions "Sarnia" for orchestra, the "Concertino" for alto saxophone and orchestra (premiered in Cologne)as well as the large-scale Sonata for cello and piano. He also composed many stage works for the Junges Theater Leverkusen. His music for "Leonce und Lena" was heard at the Bregenzer Festspiele 1999. His Singspiel for children, "Felix," a commission from the Bayer-Kulturabteilung (cultural department of Bayer) enjoyed great success.

In the past few years Stefan Esser has worked closely with the Duo Pianoworte, for whom he has composed several works. Since 2006 he has been vice-president of the Joseph-Marx-Gesellschaft (Joseph Marx Society, Vienna). www.joseph-marx-gesellschaft.org
His orchestrations of the Marx compositions "Ein Neujahrshymnus" ("A New Year's Hymn") and "Berghymne" ("Mountain Hymn") appeared in January 2009 as a CD on the CHANDOS Label.

Born on June 22, 1962 as the oldest of five brothers and sisters, I grew up in a village near Kassel. After graduating from school I went to Mainz to study to become a teacher of music, and French. I lived in Paris for two and a half years following the “Erstes Staatsexamen” (state examination) and moved to Munich in February 1989 where I completed my studies with the “Zweites Staatsexamen” (1992). Since then, I have worked as a teacher at a Munich grammar school with a fine arts track.
As to my private life, I got married in 1992 and have two daughters (born 1995 and 1997). Took my maternity leave from 1995 to 2001. I broke up with my husband in October 2004 and got divorced in July 2007. My children have stayed with me and are now 17 and 19 years old.
On the subject of composing: In my teenage years I started creating my own music, mostly setting ballads to music and writing pieces for piano (and violin). Unfortunately, I had nobody to turn to for instruction. Later on as a teacher I’ve always tried to make up for what I thought was missing from music curriculums and encouraged students, both in my regular classes and elective courses, to compose their own music. The elective courses that I held for about ten years with different participants created four musicals that were performed to great success at our school. What was important to me was that all the participants involved in composing were given a chance to contribute their ideas. This helped me to learn a lot about the creative process and the changing musical tastes of young people. A great experience!

Otto Wanke was born in 1989 in the Czech Republic. He has been living in Austria for 14 years. At the age of 18 he took private composition lessons and at 19 he began studying jazz composition at the Jazz Conservatory in Prague. As a composer he was mainly active in the field of chamber music during this period. For larger ensembles he wrote the piece ''On The Horizont for Big Band and Movements'' for string orchestra. With ''Movements'' he won the composition competition in Brno.
After 2 years in Prague he moved to Vienna where he studied classical composition with Wolfgang Liebhart as well as media and electroacoustic composition with Karlheinz Essl and Iris ter Schiphorst at the University of Music in Vienna and at the MUK. In Vienna he also began to work as a conductor and sound engineer. As an instrumentalist and composer he has already had numerous concerts in various European countries.
In 2013, he began to work with the composer Bruno Liberda. Under his influence he composed his first purely electronic piece ''Breathing Underwater'' for eight loudspeakers and won the composition competition Maarble in Greece. As a result of this success with electronic music he composed stages for violin and electronics and threads for bass clarinet and electronics. These pieces have been performed successfully in several countries, including Spain, the Czech Republic and Lithuania. Since then he has also been working as a performer in electronic music mainly in cooperation with live musicians.
His compositional repertoire now also includes a large number of works that are purely instrumental: for solo instruments, chamber music and orchestra - his orchestral works Morphen (2016) and Shimmering (2017) were premiered at the ''ORF Radiokulturhaus''.
In 2016, he was in the finals of ''Ö1 competition'' (Ö1 is a Austrian Radio Station) and his portrait was broadcasted on Radio Ö1. That same year he won the Gustav Mahler Competition. As part of this project, he has worked on an oratorio with Wolfgang Mitterer, Paul Gulda and Christoph Cech.
In 2017, he won second place in the FIMS competition in Switzerland and received an order for an orchestral piece from the orchestra in Cottbus, Germany. The new orchestral piece will be premiered in January 2018.

“Evocative and exciting … a musical voice that commands attention” – Martin Denton, NYTheatre.com
“Mr. Ashkenasi’s music [has] dimensionality and touches of poignancy” – Jeremy Eichler, New York Times
Danny Ashkenasi has been acting professionally since the age of ten and composing musical works that have been publically produced since the age of fourteen. In pursuing these arts, he has also developed his expertise as a writer, singer, director, producer and teaching artist. In recent years he has focused on creating and performing musical works that highlight the American experience, by adapting American literary masters and focusing on pertinent American historical and social themes.
His current musical writing projects include “Speakeasy – John and Jane's Adventures in the Wonderland” which explores the little know Queer culture of Prohibition era New York City; and “Feedstore Quartet” (Book and co-lyricist: Jack Hilton Cunningham) set in 1950’s Mississippi. Recently Danny adapted over 60 Langston Hughes’ poems in a full length musical revue called “I Too Sing America – The Blues According to Langston Hughes”, which was performed at the 2011 Harlem Renaissance Festival at the Metropolitan Playhouse, New York. Danny performed in his musical adaptation of Herman Melville’s “Cock-a-Doodle-Doo!” at the Metropolitan Playhouse and FringeNYC 2009. He also performed in “beTwixt, beTween & beTWAIN”, a Mark Twain Musical Comedy he wrote and composed, which played at The Producer’s Club May 16-June 8, 2008 and also had a special performance at the Westport Library in CN.
Danny Ashkenasi is an American citizen who was born and raised in Berlin, Germany. Consequently he also acts and has musical compositions produced in that country, including the musical “Wir Pfeifen auf den Gurkenkoenig” (text: Peter Lund), which had a long run in Berlin, “Once Upon A Frog /Es war einmal ein Frosch”, which was performed in English in Berlin, and recently enjoyed its German language premiere (translated by Danny Ashkenasi) at the Wetzlarer Festpiele; and “Hexen” (text: P. Lund), which has enjoyed dozens of productions throughout Germany, three alone in Berlin, including at the Deutsche Oper, as well as Austria and Finland (The English adaptation “Witches”, translated by Danny Ashkenasi, has been performed twice in New York.). He is the only composer twice invited as a finalist to the Hamburg Musical Festival.
Other US works includes “The Song of Job 9:11” (Text: D. Ashkenasi), performed in concert in New York numerous times since 2002, and produced theatrically at the FringeNYC Festival in 2004; and the chamber opera “Jenseits” (Text: Helga Krauss), produced as “Beyond” at the Village Temple and at the FringeNYC Festival 2005, both directed by Mr. Ashkenasi. He also composed a musicalisation (or “musicabre”) of Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”, which he performed (accompanied/surrounded by three cellos) at the Metropolitan Playhouse’s Poe festival and the 2006 FringeNYC Festival, where he won the FringeNYC award for “Outstanding Music and Lyrics”, and which was also produced by the TrypTych Concert and Opera in Toronto.
Other musical works produced in New York include “When Thou, My Music, Music Play’st” (Text: W. Shakespeare, adapted from his Sonnets), “Lucky Hans” (Text: Margie Duffield) and “Les Artistes” (Text: Greg Steinbrunar). He has also composed several one-act musicals for the Berkshire Ensemble for Theatre Arts and the International Schools Theatre Association England Summer Program. Chamber music compositions of his include Evocations I – XXII for Viola and Piano, Aphorisms for Mezzo Soprano and Trumpet, and the Spree Forest Suite for Flute and Harp, which was recorded by the Duo Elysee.
Additional acting credits include Off- and Off-Off Broadway, regional theater and tours, and theater, TV and film in Germany.

Jack Ballard, PhD, has composed, performed and produced music in a variety of genres, from classical and film music to jazz and bluegrass. He worked with Gunther Schuller, Wendell Jones, Arthur Post, David Maddux, and Frank Wiley, and received B.A.Ed and M.M. degrees from Central Washington and Eastern Washington Universities. His half-dissertation on hyperextended tertian sonority is from Kent State University. Its initial research received the Bruce Benward Student Music Theory Award in 2007. His ballet, The Castle for orchestra, received the Ipark Foundation’s Thanatopolis Prize for Memorial Composition for the movement, “Lament,” and in 2012 was the winner of GBE competition for his piece, Dances for solo violin. A selection from his oratorio, Incarnatus Dei won Honorable Mention with the Vanguard Premiers competition, and he is recently finished his Concerto for Orchestra.
Probably the best known representation of his diversity in styles and instrumentation is his song cycle The Psalms (REX Music, 1994), which includes such jazz notables as Alex Acuña, David Friesen, Fletch Wiley, Tom Patitucci, and others, and members of the Oregon Symphony. “So unique and creative, it breaks new artistic ground” from National Religious Broadcaster. “A great collection:” Moody Monthly. Of his symphonic poem for orchestra, The Traveler’s Psalm, the Durango Herald wrote: “Enchanting, lyrical and polished to the point that it sounded as if it were the work of one of our time-honored masters.”
As a Fulbright Scholar in African Music (Kenya, 2013), it is no surprise that his pieces often incorporate classical and ethnic styles throughout the world, but especially New World and Old World styles that contributed to the development of music in North and South America. Ballard’s production company, Kiwibird Creative Services, specializes in production that develops popular and classical style integration, such as film scoring and eclectic CD projects, and markets its services in the film world as being genre-, ethnically and period- specific and diverse.
He presently teaches music production, ethnomusicology, and composition at Malone University in Canton, Ohio.

is a concert pianist and composer. Her concerts captivate through the particularly original and charming way she presents her performances. The artist herself arouses the interest and curiosity of her audience in the works she is about to play with an informative introduction. Besides the classical repertoire and the music of her native country, Brazil, she plays also her own compositions in concert. Today composition is the main focus of her work.
Born in Porto Alegre in southern Brazil, she completed her piano studies with Dirce Knijnik and Norma Bojunga. Passing her final examinations with distinction, she was awarded a grant by the government of Brazil to continue her studies in Germany. This she did at the "State Academy for Music" in Karlsruhe, under Kalle Randalu and Michael Uhde.
While still studying she took part in master classes and music festivals in both Europe and South America together with pianists such as Bruno Canino, Rudolph Kehrer, Roberto Szidon, Lev Vlasenko, Homero Magalhaes, Dinorah Varsi, Miguel Proença and others, which greatly deepened and extended the breadth of her vision of music.
Iara Behs's career as a pianist has already been crowned with a great deal of success. She won first prize in the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra's "Competition for Young Soloists" and was named the "best interpreter of Brazilian music" in a piano competition held by the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. Her activity as a concert pianist has seen her perform in Brazil and in many countries of Europe where she also performed as a soloist with well-known orchestras conducted by Zygmunt Rychert, Arlindo Teixeira, Nestor Wennholz, Alexandru Lascae, Petr Vronsky and others. She has also made recordings for radio and appeared on television.
Iara lives in Germany with her husband and daughter.

His rhythmic style is very catchy and partly reminds of the way on which Astor Piazolla played.
Piazzolla's compositional technique is in contrast to his own more of a

melody returns to its simplicity giving the counterpoint a new sense of simplicit and .

French-Romanian Diana Cotoman is a member of the French equivalent of the Performing Rights Society for Music, the SACEM and of the SACD, the Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers.
After an initial training in Romania as a violinist, Diana spends 15 years in Paris and develops her musical spectrum teaching, conducting and, above all, composing.
Diana develops an original style, combining influences inherited from Eastern European folklore and her classical music education with minimalism, jazz and electro-acoustic explorations. The key word to her musical universe is melody.

She now lives in Montreal, Canada, and explores scoring for films and video games.

Luis Fonseca was born in Recife, Brazil and kept his interest in composing since his first musical studies, doing it besides his Double Bass career as self-taught and having private lessons as well, when he finally decided to study it as he moved to Madrid, by Prof. Sergio Luque and Prof. Alberto Bernal in the CSKG center, where he could also assist to open lessons from Alberto Posadas, Mesías Maiguashca, Enrique Tomás, José Manuel Berengher and Michael Beil.
These studies were in the electronic field, but after all, learning computer assisted composition as well as algorithmic composition brought him to another way of composing, but not using electronics as a general condition in his works. He finds himself developing new ways of generate music algorithmically and mix it with traditional structures and aesthetics as well. He is nowadays studying a Doctor degree in the algorithmic composition field in the “Universidad Autónoma de Madrid” by José Luis Carles and Sergio Luque. His music has been played in Spain, Brazil, Germany, Australia, United States, Venezuela, Lithuania, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.
Luis Fonseca has a "Honorable Mention" on the "David Walter International Composition Competition 2016" promoted by the ISB (International Society of Bassists/ USA) for his piece "Mandelbrot Sonata" for Double Bass and Piano and his piece “homeTown” for Double Bass, video & electronics was finalist in the MA/IN Composition Competition and presented in the MA/IN Festival in Matera - Italy in December 2016. I come from a family of three successive generations: my grandfather, my father (he was a professional musician with a comprehensive education), and myself. I am the third in line as a professional musician. I started at the age of 3 years with my musical progress and playing the clarinet. At the age of 5 years I took the test for the Union of Musicians in order to become a professional but the permitted age for such an examination at the time was 16 years of age. At the age of 5, I was in two bands, one in San Roque for children and another professional band in La Línea with my father and grandfather. Afterwards I joined another band of my father's in addition to studying and being tested free of charge at the conservatory. After that I created my own music group and alternated with a music group of my father's when after 7 years we became successful with the band La Linea.
... As I continued my studies, I entered the ''La Linea Conservatory''. I was in classes that were part of the daily life of a conservatory where I learned that it is not the same as being free of charge. After several music groups, where we missed all kinds of music and events, I recorded my own album, which was one of the top ten on ''Cadena Dial'' for 6 months with the theme of "La Quiero". I was called Sonay, hence the SGAE (General Society of Spanish Authors) with my father who handed over to me as an author and songwriter, like Alicia Domínguez and also the pseudonym Sonay. I was on television, radio and I have now published books extensively in this field.
Over a period of 15 years I have been teaching and I am pleased that all the results were very positive, both with exams, as well as training in music,... I had a choir of both young and older children a few years ago.... Now part of a program of special classes. I use music therapy for children with neurological disorders, delays, autisms, asperge, nystagmus, cerebral infarctions etc..... I once again implemented a dissertation aid, benefits and recreation therapy which uses music for neurological diseases affecting children and up to and including senior citizens. I sent this to Sgae and also to Her Majesty the Queen Doña Sofía de España, in which she expressed her appreciation to me for its contribution to the thesis of neurological experts of the Alzheimer disease of Vallecas (Madrid).

Michael Drewes was born and raised in Germany and moved with his family to Mexico City at age fourteen, where he lived for twenty-six years. His youthful interests centered on drawing, sculpting and designing buildings. He received his Bachelors degree in Architecture and his Masters in Art History from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and his Ph. D. in Architectural History from the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany.
<br><br>
Drewes became curious about music in his mid-teens and learned to play the cello in school at that time. It was his only formal music training. Most musical knowledge was self-taught, sometimes under the guidance of experts.
<br><br>
As he started college, his mild interest became more intense, and he studied music theory, harmony and composing on his own. Musical ideas began to come to him, and he would write them down, sometimes with the aid of a neighbor's piano, and sometimes right from his head to paper - even symphonies - which he never heard, since orchestral facilities were not within his reach. He started his career with Mexico's Monuments Office, supervising restoration of church organs.
<br><br>
He continued to compose music, and filled notebooks of unplayed works. In 1985 Drewes moved to Israel, inspiring him to create different and more modern sounds, although his signature style continued to be basic classical harmonies. After eleven years living in Jerusalem (1985-1996), where he earned his living as restoration expert at the archaeological dig in Beit She'an, he moved to Miami. Musical ideas continued non-stop, and he went on to write them down. He dreams of being able some day to make his music come alive and breathe.

Irmgard and Hans Opahle had been expelled from Silesia and were looking for a new homeland, when their second daughter, Eva-Maria, was born in Gelsenkirchen. Not much later the family moved to Karlsruhe, where Eva-Maria’s four brothers were born.
At Karlsruhe Conservatory Eva-Maria learned to play the recorder, violin, piano and church organ and was taught harmony. She started studying music education at the University of Music Freiburg but, realizing that educational aspects were rather neglected in the study course, decided to train as a “mathematisch technische Assistentin” (computer technician) and pursued music as a hobby.
Her own family, which had been the primary focus in her life for many years, produced three children (who are now adults) and the name Götte-Schmidt.
1991:
After her youngest daughter was born, Eva-Maria quit her job in computers and established a private music school in Gengenbach. She developed her singing and conducting skills in numerous courses and directed choirs for many years.
An extensive training course in rhythmics provided plenty of inspiration to her as she wished to be more creative musically. The training has also impacted her work as a teacher and composer.

I was a jurist and publisher in my ''first life'' and actively enjoyed playing the cello so far as time (and energy) allowed me. I also found the the opportunity to compose. Mainly at night, when internal and external serenity was around me. Some of the works could even be performed by amateur orchestras. Now I am retired and should actually have more time for music but spend my time in a vacation house and sometimes at home. I am inspired by images during composing. Concrete images, for example the ''Images of Chernobyl''; paintings which were discovered by chance from unknown artists, which express the dispair of individuals who were directly affected by the nuclear catastrophe. They brought together a multimedia oratory for vocal soloists, chamber orchestra, narrators, and projection of images. Especially the phantasy images which were often the content of my compositions during the reading of a poem or simply resulted spontaneously.
Finally, the inconceivable ''Roses'' by Rainer Maria Rilke or ''The Adventures of Don Quixote''. The modest image in the ''Wessobrunn Prayer'' depicted by the simplistic great creation impulsively appealed to me. The ''non-existence'' of nature, which thanks to the ''Creator's actions'' is omnipresent around us, was necessary to be conceived in tones. I would like to experience eveything which I ''see'' with the sense of hearing. It has to remain audible and not just conceived or artificial. Therefore, the ear remains the unrelenting criteria for my music.

Marcus Baranowiski is born and in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais in Brazil, was born on May 28, 1972 in full military dictatorship that occupied his country for 21 years and deeply marked his childhood. He slowly approached the erudite music. He had his studies interrupted by financial question and he graduated as Technician in Automation. Only at the age of twenty-six was he able to enter into CEFAR (Palácio das Artes) a public art foundation that taught formal music teaching, so he could continue his studies of music for free. He learned techniques of choir, violin and trumpet. Once again he was obliged to abandon his studies of music for financial reasons, returning to dedicate himself to the music only at the 40 years of age of autodidact form.

I am a self-taught composer with a mission to write and deliver music that is original, accessible and imaginative.
During 2022 my piece 'An Autumn Day' was given its premiere at the London New Wind Festival, in a version for Oboe and Piano.
In 2016, I had two orchestral compositions professionally recorded by Brno Philharmonic and Mikel Toms for Ablaze Records.
Having retired from my professional career in commercial IT, I now at last have the time and energy to give full focus to my musical ideas, which have been developed over many years, through listening, playing and experimenting, backed up by some formal study.
As a saxophonist, I have written several pieces involving saxophone, including works for saxophone and piano and works for saxophone quartet.
My musical style is tonal, melodic, harmonious and dramatic, with a serious 'classical' influence.

He wrote his first composition Little Waltz Op. 1 for string quartet during his work as a writer in 1994, as background music for a film script. The first part of the Elfen-Saga is also based on his own texts. Inspired by contemporary film music from Elliot Goldenthal, Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner, his musical interests have expanded to the Classical period and especially to the Romantic period and the great symphonies of Mahler and Bruckner. A further hobby, astronomy, served as the source for the symphonic cycle for the four Galileo symphonies. Each symphony is devoted to one of the 4 Galilean moons of Jupiter (Io, Ganymed, Callisto and Europa).

Since I was a child, I’ve been keen on (mostly classical) music. I play the violin and viola in various ensembles (orchestral and chamber music, with a special liking for string quartets). Over time, I’ve felt an increasing desire to learn more about the "composer’s trade", i.e. to compose my own music.
Over the years, I’ve devoted myself to musical composition by teaching myself (composition exercises using theory books by H. Grabner, W. Maler and others). I enjoy using the Finale and Capella programs to work on my compositions.
I’ve published more than 30 pieces on the MyOwnMusic internet portal, where my works have frequently been listed among the Top 10. To listen to my music on the internet, go to https://www.myownmusic.de and enter my pseudonym "theophil". Most of my pieces are listed in the “Classical” category, and in my understanding “classical” covers a wide variety of music.

Maxim Seloujanov is an Austrian composer who was born in Moscow and studied at Mozarteum Salzburg with Boguslaw Schaeffer.
His extensive body of work, which covers almost any genre of music, is characterized by its sheer imaginativeness, offbeat humor and weird wordplays. Its stylistic diversity means that it’s almost impossible to attribute any label to it.
In addition to his musical activities, Seloujanov has also created various works in the fields of poetry, painting, theater, sculpture and multimedia.
His works have earned Seloujanov a number of prizes and awards such as the Austrian Theodor Körner Award (2003) or the German Villa Massimo Award (2006) and first prize at the Gustav Mahler Competition (Vienna, 2010).
Some of Seloujanov‘s works have been published by Edition Peters, Simon Verlag (Berlin) and Doblinger Musikverlag (Vienna).
