By highlighting in the vocal line certain text in Rilke's poem "Orpheus. Eurydike. Hermes", the song "Sie war" expresses both the precarious place of women in society in the past and the uncertainty of their path ahead. The counterpoint is reduced to its simplest modal form, so that the introduction of chromaticism brings tension to the fluid harmony according to the emotional content of the text. The perpetual rhythm expresses the journey man has taken in seeing, or trying not to see, where a woman stands; and is broken by trepidation in the way forward.
