The final concert took place on 18.07.23 at 7 pm in the Allerheiligenhofkirche in Munich.
The theme
In the Carl Orff Composition Competition 2019/23 we celebrate the 125th birthday of Carl Orff. In addition to Carmina Burana, the "Orff Schulwerk" is probably also known worldwide. On this occasion, we want to take up this pedagogical concept for the next competition. Due to a pandemic, we will not be able to hold the final concert until 2023.
The basis of the Orff Schulwerk is the creative handling of the elements of music, language and movement as elementary forms of human expression and the realization that language, dance and music are not yet differentiated fields of action for the child, that singing is accompanied from the beginning by playing instruments, and that playing back music that has been heard or written down or dancing traditional forms also involves self-discovery and self-creation. The Orff-Schulwerk, as an elementary music and dance pedagogy, activates an expressive potential that exists in every human being, but also cross-cultural musical behaviors.
In this sense, the compositions of this competition should promote an understanding of other cultures. Therefore, the theme of the composition should be a freely chosen, universally known folk song from the mother tongue of the composer. Essentially, the works should be able to be sung by children and played by children with a selection of Orff instruments.

Avshalomov, David
David Avshalomov is a distinguished third-generation American classical composer and conductor, and an accomplished vocalist. He was born in New York City in 1946, grew up in Oregon, and has long lived in Santa Monica, California. He represents a musical lineage (on his father’s side) whose story stretches from the Caucasus to Siberia, through China, to the US.
As a young student, David studied piano, music theory, and percussion. He learned the joys of madrigal singing at home, sang in school and professional choruses, and played timpani in school and professional orchestras (soloing in the Milhaud concerto with the Harvard Orchestra). He began composing (self-taught) in middle school, and wrote and conducted his first choral compositions for his high school choir. He earned degrees in music from Harvard (B.A., Magna cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa) and in orchestral conducting from the University of Washington (where he wrote a noted Doctoral dissertation on the Five Pieces for Orchestra of Arnold Schoenberg), with further conducting studies at Peabody, Aspen, and Tanglewood. His conducting teachers included George Bell, Stanley Chapple, Leo Mueller, Jean Morel, Henry Holt, Samuel Krachmalnick, Herbert Blomstedt, Werner Torkanowsky, Seiji Ozawa, and Leonard Bernstein. His composition teachers included Charles Jones (at Aspen); and John Verrall, Robert Suderberg, and William Bergsma (at UW).
COMPOSER
A composer grounded in the traditions of Western classical music, David Avshalomov creates his works in an accessible modern romantic, neo-tonal style that balances a rich lyric gift with a characteristic rhythmic vitality and pungent harmonies. The forms he crafts are conservative and developmental, his compositional voice distinctive. The influences on his style include the great 20th-century European and American tonal composers, and both his late father Jacob and his paternal grandfather, Aaron Avshalomoff.
“Melody is the thread of my daily life. I still find new paths through traditional musical forms, and fresh expression based in folk idioms
and drawing on old melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic roots.”
He has composed works for solo voice, choruses, orchestra, band, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments, in forms ranging from songs and incidental pieces to full-length oratorio. A decade ago he started focusing more on vocal, choral, and band music, and he recently completed his first two operas, with two more on the drawing board.
“As a longtime mountain man and lover of nature and wilderness I am more and more impelled to write music that is about our fundamental connection to nature and wilderness, healing the Earth, and social justice.”
He has had commissions from numerous organizations, including the Kaplan Foundation of St. Mary’s University, MN; San Jose Chamber Orchestra, Mission Chamber Orchestra, Musica Bella Orchestra of NY, Portland Jewish Community Center Orchestra, Western Plains Wind Consortium (20 bands), 2012 Bandwagon Consortium (27 bands), LA Flute Orchestra, LA Clarinet Orchestra, Odyssea Chorus of Lisbon, Anglican Chorale of Southern California, Camerata Singers of Long Beach, Westwood United Methodist Church (LA), and St. George’s Episcopal (La Cañada). He has also been Resident Composer with the Anglican Chorale of Southern California, Camerata Singers of Long Beach CA, Torrance Civic Chorale, and Cantori Domino of Santa Monica.
His compositions have been performed professionally across the U.S. and in Europe, Russia, China, Japan, and South America, and are recorded on the Albany and Naxos labels. He has earned grants from Meet the Composer, the American Music Center, the American Composer’s Forum, and two from the Durfee Foundation. In 2014 he was designated an Honored Artist of the American Prize in recognition of the consistently high quality of his submitted works.
His compositions have won numerous awards, including
Third Prize,7th International Band Composition Competition Harelbeke, Belgium , 2019; Hong Kong Children's Choir 50th Anniversary Choral Selection Winner, 2018; First Prize, International Orange Chorale of San Francisco Choral Composition Contest 2016; Grand Prize, Solo and Chamber Timpanist's Initiative Competition 2017, American Prize for Band Composition 2016 (2rd Prize), Mountainside Master Chorale (Pomona, CA) Composition Contest 2016 (2nd Prize), First Place, American Prize 2015 for Band Composition (semifinalist in 5 genres, finalist in 3); American Prize 2014 for Band Composition (3rd Place, and dual finalist, Orchestral and Chamber Composition), Special Judge’s Citation for Unique Artistic Achievement and Distinctive Merit from the American Prize for Orchestral Composition 2012; Polifonia (Lithuania) International Sacred Choral Music Competition 2013 (Second Prize), ACDA Silver Platter Award for Outstanding Choral Repertoire 2012; PROJECT: ENCORE Choral Work of Exceptional Merit 2013 (Schola Cantorum on Hudson); The C7 Prize, Canada 2014 (2 choral works); First Prize, Sul Ross State University, TX, Wind Ensemble Composition Contest; Hillcrest Wind Ensemble, San DiegoComposition Contest 2013 (2nd Prize); six Vox Nova – Fifteen Minutes of Fame awards 2014-2019, the Aspen Festival Prize, the Korg Competition, and the Santa Monica Debut Concert Series award 2006.
SINGER
Avshalomov was tapped early as a vocal soloist (starting in grade school in Manhattan). He got his vocal training with his mother Doris (who trained at Eastman), music teacher Nell Givler, choral conductors George Bell and John Ferris, and recently with Glenn Carlos. While still in high school he sang a season with the Munich Motettenchor. At Harvard he was a professional chorister and a frequent oratorio and motet soloist and madrigalist. He served a tour of duty with the USAF Band as a vocalist in the Singing Sergeants (also serving as arranger, composer, and timpanist). After moving to Los Angeles, he sang with several chamber vocal groups including Madrigalia, Cantori di Mezzogiorno, and Soffio di Viento. He continues to sing as a freelance professional bass soloist and choral section leader, with such groups as C3LA, the De Angelis Vocal Ensemble, Anglican Chorale of Southern California, Cantori Domino, Vox Pro, Temple Israel of Hollywood, Temple Sha’arei Am, and Camerata Singers of Long Beach. He also presents solo recitals and performs roles in local stage opera productions (Center Stage Opera, Redlands Opera Theater).
David Avshalomov is noted for his strong and nuanced bass voice, wide range, stylistic mastery, and emotional renditions. He brings to his own music and the music of others the sensibilities, interpretation, and expression of a mature vocal artist.
CONDUCTOR
Avshalomov worked professionally for over 20 years as a conductor of orchestras, choruses, bands, and opera. In 1980 he founded the Santa Monica Chamber Orchestra, a period-practice Baroque orchestra, which he led and managed for a decade, earning civic accolades and critical notice. He was music director of several other ensembles on both coasts, and has guest-conducted over 50 ensembles in the US and Japan. He toured in the Far East and Europe, and recorded his own music and that of his grandfather Aaron in Moscow for the Naxos label. He still guest-conducts performances of his own compositions. His conducting work has garnered repeated listings in Who’s Who in Music and Who’s Who in the West.
BALANCE
For balance, David returns to nature. He hikes (off-trail), camps, backpacks, ski tours, and snowshoes in West Coast mountains, forest, and wilderness—habitat where he feels most in harmony. At home he walks, bicycles, swims, boogie-boards, practices Tai Chi ,Yoga, and Qi Gong, reads (mostly fiction), studies Torah with a men’s group at his Reform temple, and spends time with his wife Randi, in their Santa Monica bungalow near the Pacific shore where he has his studio. He also volunteers, planting trees in local forest burn zones and serving at a local food bank and homeless shelter, and organizes for social justice.

Cmiral, Elia
Born in Czechoslovakia, Elia Cmiral is the son of an actress and a theater director, and grandson of one of Antonin Dvorak’s pupils. A multi instrumentalist, Cmiral attended the Prague Music Conservatory, where he studied composition and double bass. Elia's first scoring opportunity came with his father's production of "Cyrano de Bergerac." From this experience he discovered his passion for writing for the stage.
By the early 80's, Cmiral had moved to Sweden. Throughout his time there he wrote scores for several European films, TV and three ballets. In 1989, he moved to America for USC's Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program. His year at USC culminated with the scoring of his first American feature, "Apartment Zero” starring Colin Firth.
Over the next decade, Elia continued building a reputation for himself in Sweden and in America. His musical style combines contemporary electronica with the modern orchestra, joining cutting edge technology and production with evocative and haunting melodic themes. Elia scored the first season of Don Johnson‘s TV series “Nash Bridges” and his first studio feature, John Frankenheimer’s suspense thriller “Ronin”, which earned him the Movieline Young Hollywood Award for Best Soundtrack of 1998, won International Film Music Critics award for Breakthrough Film Composer of the Year as well as was nominated for the Best Original Score for an Action Film.
To the date Elia has written nearly sixty scores for independent films, TV and major studios including "Stigmata", trilogy "Pulse", "Wrong Turn", "Journey to the End of the Night", "The Deaths of Ian Stone" produced by Stan Winston.
For the score for “Splinter” a cutting edge horror film with stunning visuals, directed by Toby Wilkins, Elia received the Best Score award at the Screamfest '08 film festival in Los Angeles, and for his work on "Lost Boys – The Thirst", he was nominated for the Golden Reel.
Elia worked with Czech director Juraj Herz on the score for the German/Czech produced film "Habermann". The movie is a WWII drama based on a true story, the movie won the top price at the 7th “Jewish Eye” Film Festival in Ashkelon, Israel. Other projects included a rock score for "Spec Ops: The Line", a video game by German-based developer Yeager and 2K. Elia also composed part of a movement in collaboration between twenty-four Hollywood composers, “A Symphony of Hope”, which is on sale to benefit victims of the Haiti earthquake disaster. Elia wrote and epic orchestral scores for "Atlas Shrugged Part 1 and 3", based on Ayn Rand’s novel.
Elia wrote and produced an album for four piano trios based on his film scores (Ronin, Apartment Zero, Habermann and Atlas Shrugged Part 1) released on a Swedish label Moviescoremedia. Next Elia wrote a score for "Lacrimosa" a short Austrian art film directed by Vienna based director Tanja Mairitsch. The score is featuring world star Master Zamfir on the pan flute. The movie and the score were awarded at many international film festivals.
Following was Elia's hybrid score for action/thriller "Armed Response", starring Wesley Snipes, later Elia reteamed with the director Mark Young on their four collaboration for the thriller/horror "Feral", following a period Hawaiian drama directed by David Cunningham. "Running for Grace" starring Matt Dillon.
In the next collaboration with the director Mark Young in drama "Limbo" Elia connected a classical theme featuring a female soprano and a chamber orchestra.
The film was selected for the opening night at the film festival in Manchester, UK and at the Beverly Hills Film Festival in Los Angeles, US.
For the Polish director Renata Gabryjelska and her feature drama "Safe Inside" Elia wrote a dramatic score for a chamber orchestra mixed with his electronica. The score will be soon available on the CD album.
Recently Elia finished writing a concert suite for solo pan flute and symphonic orchestra, composition is dedicated to a Romanian virtuoso Gheorghe Zamfir, who will play the premiere of the suite.

I come from a family of three successive generations: my grandfather, my father (he was a professional musician with a comprehensive education), and myself. I am the third in line as a professional musician. I started at the age of 3 years with my musical progress and playing the clarinet. At the age of 5 years I took the test for the Union of Musicians in order to become a professional but the permitted age for such an examination at the time was 16 years of age. At the age of 5, I was in two bands, one in San Roque for children and another professional band in La Línea with my father and grandfather. Afterwards I joined another band of my father's in addition to studying and being tested free of charge at the conservatory. After that I created my own music group and alternated with a music group of my father's when after 7 years we became successful with the band La Linea.
... As I continued my studies, I entered the ''La Linea Conservatory''. I was in classes that were part of the daily life of a conservatory where I learned that it is not the same as being free of charge. After several music groups, where we missed all kinds of music and events, I recorded my own album, which was one of the top ten on ''Cadena Dial'' for 6 months with the theme of "La Quiero". I was called Sonay, hence the SGAE (General Society of Spanish Authors) with my father who handed over to me as an author and songwriter, like Alicia Domínguez and also the pseudonym Sonay. I was on television, radio and I have now published books extensively in this field.
Over a period of 15 years I have been teaching and I am pleased that all the results were very positive, both with exams, as well as training in music,... I had a choir of both young and older children a few years ago.... Now part of a program of special classes. I use music therapy for children with neurological disorders, delays, autisms, asperge, nystagmus, cerebral infarctions etc..... I once again implemented a dissertation aid, benefits and recreation therapy which uses music for neurological diseases affecting children and up to and including senior citizens. I sent this to Sgae and also to Her Majesty the Queen Doña Sofía de España, in which she expressed her appreciation to me for its contribution to the thesis of neurological experts of the Alzheimer disease of Vallecas (Madrid).

Drewes, Michael
Michael Drewes was born and raised in Germany and moved with his family to Mexico City at age fourteen, where he lived for twenty-six years. His youthful interests centered on drawing, sculpting and designing buildings. He received his Bachelors degree in Architecture and his Masters in Art History from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and his Ph. D. in Architectural History from the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany.
<br><br>
Drewes became curious about music in his mid-teens and learned to play the cello in school at that time. It was his only formal music training. Most musical knowledge was self-taught, sometimes under the guidance of experts.
<br><br>
As he started college, his mild interest became more intense, and he studied music theory, harmony and composing on his own. Musical ideas began to come to him, and he would write them down, sometimes with the aid of a neighbor's piano, and sometimes right from his head to paper - even symphonies - which he never heard, since orchestral facilities were not within his reach. He started his career with Mexico's Monuments Office, supervising restoration of church organs.
<br><br>
He continued to compose music, and filled notebooks of unplayed works. In 1985 Drewes moved to Israel, inspiring him to create different and more modern sounds, although his signature style continued to be basic classical harmonies. After eleven years living in Jerusalem (1985-1996), where he earned his living as restoration expert at the archaeological dig in Beit She'an, he moved to Miami. Musical ideas continued non-stop, and he went on to write them down. He dreams of being able some day to make his music come alive and breathe.

Alissa DURYEE
biography
Alissa is a French-American keyboardist, composer and pedagogue. She began her musical studies on the piano with Donaldo Garcia at the Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division in New York City. She completed her university studies at Vassar College. At the end of her studies she comes to Paris to study with Gérard Frémy and Guigla Katsarava at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris.
As a scholarship holder of the Harriet Hale Woolley Foundation, she pursued her interest in instrument making and historical keyboards. She first built a linked clavichord, then a double French harpsichord, before training on these instruments with Olivier Baumont, Noëlle Spieth, and Frédéric Michel. To complete her vision of keyboard instruments, she studied fortepiano (Malcolm Bilson, Bart van Oort, David Breitman) and organ (Patrick Delabre, Marie-Louise Langlais).
Her approach to historical instruments, both organologically and culturally, nourishes her approach as a composer: she devotes herself almost exclusively to this family of instruments. With a "panoramic" vision of keyboards, she creates innovative music that draws its sources from ancient practices: ornamentation, improvisation, non-specificity of instrument... Intrigued by the possibility that the "undesirable" characteristics of an instrument can be a source of inspiration, she composes "Forager's Journal" for clavichord which will be awarded Second Prize at the International Clavichord Composition Competition of the Nordic Historical Keyboard Festival. Her pieces are premiered at the CNSM in Paris during the Journées de Clavecin in France, at the Amherst Early Music Festival (USA), and performed in recitals in France and abroad.
Her work aims to question certain conventions of the classical concert situation. In particular, she questions the role of the performer, (Opus Incertum) by encouraging his or her participation in the shaping of a work. Following her experiences as an organist and her research in the archives of American colonial music, she questions the musical act; in addition to the concert, how it can be present on a daily basis; what alternatives exist to the traditional "face to face" between audience and performer. As a result of this reflection she performs in elevators.
Alissa's creative actions are supported by the Conseil Départemental de l'Eure et Loir and the Région Centre. Fascinated by the unifying power of music and its potential to convey values, she creates works in collaboration with primary and secondary school children, around themes such as ecology or the acceptance of others, in an aesthetic of farce/surrealist show. She is the author of a collection of educational pieces and several dance music.
As a performer, she strives to defend ancient music as well as contemporary creation. She has been artist in residence at the Banff Centre (Alberta, Canada) and at several festivals in France and North America (Les Journées Lyriques, the Amherst Early Music Festival, the Boston Clavichord Society) where she performs as a soloist or in ensemble, on piano, harpsichord, clavichord, or organ. She is an active member of several ensembles, including 'le Bel Esprit', (Baroque ensemble with variable geometry) and the duo Dialogues, which she forms with the cellist Jérôme Huille. Her work in collaboration with the composers Nissim Schaul and Ivane Bellocq creates a real dialogue between composer and instrumentalist.

1964 - 1966 organ with Luigi Favini, Zurich Conservatory
Recorder on the side, guitar self-taught.
1967 to 1969 - alto in the church choir Sacred Heart Zurich-Oerlikon.
At the same time I enjoyed practicing drawing and painting, design and handicrafts, composing, transcribing, arranging and transposing (at that time there were no computers and music programs) and inventing stories.
While raising my children, I was playing mainly Bach at home, often several hours a day.
1978 - moved to Trasadingen Kanton Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
1980 to 2000 - alto in the Schaffhauser madrigalist lead by Gisela Zweifel-Fehlmann
1984 to 1992 - sporadically temporary organizer at churches in Trasadingen, Wilchingen and Osterfingen.
1979 to 2014 - own private music school for piano, keyboard, recorder, accompanying and melodic guitar.
In between I practiced the violin for half a year because my father and my brothers were playing violin, viola and cello in an orchestra. I realized that I can do it even if I practiced at least half an hour daily. I refrained from this again because I was really a jack of all trades anyway.
One of my children, Florian Michael Benedict Egli, born 1982 in Trasadingen, studied jazz saxophone and composition at the College for Music and Theater in Zurich and received a degree with honors. He has his own groups and also plays in Lucerne Jazz Orchestra, upto now does tours in Japan, Russia, Berlin (in that order). He also gives saxophone lessons at cantonal music schools. He also plays piano, flute, clarinet and all kinds of saxophones.
My other children and grandchildren play piano and guitar as salon music.
My parents and grandparents were all passionate about music. Who did not play professionally, was an instructor and built her/his own violins, sang soprano in operettas or played salon music appreciatively and extensively.

Eichmann, Alexander
The German composer, musician and music educator Alexander Eichmann was born in Tobol (former Soviet Union) in 1961. At the age of 15 he was accepted as a young student at the Rudniy Conservatory. Alexander Eichmann completed his artistic studies in the main subjects button accordion (bayan) and conducting with distinction at the "Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky Music Academy" Ekaterinburg (Russia) in the master class of Prof. Klukin.
At the age of 29 concurrently to his position as music school director, solo performances followed with symphony orchestras in Russia and Kazakhstan.
A major turning point in his biography was his move to Germany in 1993 when he began studying music teaching at the University of Cologne. During his teacher training, he regularly gave concerts as a soloist with the program for bayan solo in North Rhine-Westphalia, e.g. in Cologne Cathedral or at the prizewinner's concert of the International Organ Competition of the Hermann Schröder Society.
After years of improvisation and writing numerous arrangements, he was overcome by a great desire to write down his own music. Since then he has been composing for a wide range of instrumentations. His catalogue of works includes works for solo instruments and various ensemble formations, including a string quartet, as well as several pieces for wind and symphonic orchestra.
In addition, he is a music educator for the MPI Foundation (Washington), where he works to optimize the schooling of children from immigrant backgrounds. In 2017, he was honoured for his voluntary work by the Federal Minister of the Interior Thomas De Maiziere on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany.
At the 1st International Eisenach Composition Prize in 2019, his composition "Sage" was awarded equal status with five other works from all entries. It ranked just behind the prize winner and was judged as a valued performance piece.

At Karlsruhe Conservatory Eva-Maria learned to play the recorder, violin, piano and church organ and was taught harmony. She started studying music education at the University of Music Freiburg but, realizing that educational aspects were rather neglected in the study course, decided to train as a “mathematisch technische Assistentin” (computer technician) and pursued music as a hobby.

I began to learn the piano and music reading at the age of 6. i practiced a lot this instrument until the College. When I passed the baccalaureat certificate, I didn't choose a musical fork and prefered to go in environmental studies. Then 2 years after, I finally entered a conservatory to finalize what I started before.
Now I am a piano teacher in associative music schools.
Composing since I am 15 years old, beginning with CAM and doing the
-Armolithae project with a friend, just trying to do musical creations destined to video games, ambient, films, other creations. Armolithae did around twenty compositions then stopped.
Now i prefer to compose for acoustic instrument.
-I learned the Breton folk music a few years ago, and I decided to adapt and arrange melodies for piano. I also did some composition with Celtic harp, cello.
-I learned (and praticing) some composition technics with teachers and artists (Philippe Mion, Jonathan Pontier, I also met Anthony Girard) seeing old technics (classical harmony rules) to newer technics (composers rules !) with a lot of non-usual utilisation of instruments.
-I also participated to the Montréal movie music contest (CICMFM) by composing a short string quartet
-I have a lot of non-finished project and composition and a lot of idea (including a quartet with a cithare, pieces for prepared piano, etc) but a lot of sleeping projects.
Awards/Certificates :
-I passed the CEM (french conservatory certificate)
-The project "Les Vendredis Classiques de Saint-Aignan" (Classical Fridays of Saint-Aignan) consists of monthly concert in the town Saint-Aignan since 2012. I launched this project with my association. In 2014, the project received the second prize of Trophée J'pass.

Valery Grunsky (Valerii Hrunskyi)
Since early childhood I was interested in music. I got my first musical impressions thanks to my parents. My father George Grunsky and my mother Anna Grunska loved to sing Ukrainian songs at home during our everyday activities. Being a little child I used to listen to their songs and tried to repeat the melodies playing the piano, which we had in the kindergarten. Also I liked to improvise my own melodies in the low and middle registers.
At the age of 7, I started learning to play the accordion at a local music school (graduated in 1970). There I also studied elementary music theory and played folk instruments in the orchestra.
Since 1975 till 1981, I studied polyphony, orchestration and composition and other musical disciplines at Kharkiv I.P. Kotlyarevsky National University of Arts. There I had a chance to participate in a composition conference, where my Piano Suite was performed for the first time on a professional level.
In 1981 - 1994, I worked as a teacher of music theory, solfeggio and accordion in music schools in Sloviansk, Mykolaivka, etc. During this period, I was volunteering as a music arranger for local musical ensembles, as well as arranging folk songs and music for school plays, etc.
Since 2005, I have been working with the Kyiv Quartet of Saxophonists of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine under the direction of Yurii Vasylevich. Works written for the quartet were performed in different countries.
In 2009-2016, I worked as a singer of the Patriarchal Choir in Volodymyr Cathedral in Kyiv. Since 2016 till February 24, 2022, I sang in a choir of St. Andrew's Cathedral in Bucha. Knowing the choir allows me to improve my composing skills and write new works. Before moscow’s invasion of Ukraine I lived in Irpin with my wife. Fleeing the horrors of war we managed to get out of occupied Irpin and go to Poland, then to Croatia, where I am at the moment.

I have a bachelor's degree in cointerpoint music and a diploma in 20th century music composition.
Since 2002 that I finished my studies, I have been working as a music teacher in a private elementary school for almost 15 years.
At the same time, I work as a chorus conductor of my city's choirs for 19 years now, conducting and arranging pieces for both children and adults choirs (SATB and SSAA), with piano or small orchestra accompaniment presentations.
During the last 5 years I also work as a music teacher at the public music academy of my city, where I teach the piano and music to children of age 4-7.
I get to work with 60 children (small orchestras with glockenspiels, boomwhackers, kids percussion, and soprano recorders) and twice a year we present our work at the local city theaters while at the end of each year we do recordings of our finished pieces.

Mari Liukkonen (b. 1977) graduated as a church musician from the Oulu Conservatory in 1999. Her main instrument was the organ. She also graduated as a music teacher from Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences in 2006, focusing on early childhood music education. Her main instrument was singing, and she is still pursuing vocal studies alongside her work. She also sings in three professional choirs in Finland. Liukkonen has worked both as a cantor-organist and as an early childhood music teacher at various educational institutions, organizations and churches. Since autumn 2017, Liukkonen has served as a cantor-organist in the Hailuoto parish.
Liukkonen started practicing music in the age of four with a children's choir and piano lessons. During her childhood and youth music studies, her instrument was the violin, but as she progressed to professional church musician studies, the violin changed to piano, organ and singing. In addition to these, Liukkonen also plays eg. guitar, ukulele, viola, recorders, kantele and rhytmical instruments, including also Orff-instruments. Liukkonen regularly performs as a singer, accompanist and choir member.
Liukkonen has studied composing and arranging music eg. In Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences. In 2009, she was awarded the 1st prize in the “Musiikkia meille ja teille” -composition competition organized by the early music teachers' association. Susana Tolosa at Isaias Orbe conservatory in his hometown. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in composition, obtained in the Arts Faculty of Universidad Nacional de La Plata. It is an “undefined” type of music, yet strongly rooted with the identity and history of its people. In Olano’s words, “There is no art that isn’t political or is without an ideology; my music plows through those waters… If there is nothing to say as political subjects, who are affected by the development of history, it’s better to say nothing, then.”
He has received several prized an accolades for his work in musical composition, among which are the selection made by Greg Patillo (Project Trio), the piece “Vermouth with fries” (flute, cello and double bass) and the Diabelli International Composer Contest, reaching the final stage among 125 composers of different countries with his piece “Elisión”, premiered in April 2015 in Munich (Germany) at the Münchner Künstlerhaus.
During 2015 and 2016, his pieces were premiered in Argentina, South Africa, Germany, France, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and the United States.
Three of his pieces have been shown in Művelődési Szint (Müszi), Budapest, Hungary, in the Music after the end of music cycle, organized by Conceptual Soundproductions Budapest: “The nobodies” for 4 to 16 singers/performers, "Waiting Room" for a saxophone duo, and "Keep the change" for flute, bass trombone and percussion.
His latest premieres were at the University Of Tennessee (Knoxville, Tennessee) with his piece “Milongazo”, for tuba and violin, interpreted by Kenyon Wilson and Marcy J. Wilson at the International Tuba & Euphonium Association Conference at the University of Tennessee and in Bourdeaux (France) of "तुलसी" for flute, bansuri and mandolin, interpreted by Etienne Rolin and Vincent Beer-Demander.
He has composed pieces for soloists, choirs, ensembles and symphony orchestra. Among them, “Chakra”, was premiered at Teatro Argentino in La Plata, together with composers from Brazil, Spain, Mexico and Portugal, in the context of “III Encuentro Internacional de Producción Artística en Formato Digital”. Olano’s pieces have been interpreted by different ensembles and soloists throughout the world; he has received numerous requests to premiere and distribute his music as well.

Pfaffenberger, Jürgen
Jürgen Pfaffenberger was born in Leipzig in January 1951. His interest in music was awakened when he was given a small accordion along with some music books. While still a child, he taught himself the basic skills for playing various types of accordions and bandoneons. In much the same way he acquired a substantial knowledge of reading and writing music. In the late 1960s he took part in an open competition for contemporary dance music held by the city of Leipzig where he was among the award winners.
While training to become a primary school teacher with music as a third subject, Pfaffenberger composed and arranged music that he played together with a group of fellow students at public performances. In his teaching job, he taught all grades right from the beginning. Besides that, he directed various choirs and an instrumental group at his school. His compositional work at that time consisted primarily of songs. The group participated in a number of concerts for schoolchildren where Hans Sandig’s “Besuch im Zoo” (A Visit to the Zoo) was performed.
From 1980, when he graduated from the conservatory as a certified music teacher, until his retirement in 2012 Pfaffenberger concentrated on his teaching job. While there was not much time left for composing he wrote various “Gebrauchsmusik“ pieces and contributed music to a number of children's theater projects.
In recent years, Pfaffenberger has started dedicating more of his time to composing, creating music for amateur theater groups and social dance clubs. As an exercise in orchestral composition, he wrote a symphonic piece in three movements. In 2013, he contributed leitmotif-based musical episodes for an adaptation of Charles Dickens‘ “A Christmas Carol”. In 2014, Pfaffenberger composed a cycle titled “Musikalische Geschichten” (Musical Tales). It comprises ten program music pieces (e.g. “A Picture”, “The Old Castle”, “Stranded”, …) for orchestra that are meant to catch the audience with sophisticated, fanciful music.

I was born in 1952 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
My mother played cello in the "Orchester der Landesregierung" and was a member of a string quartet. My grandmother taught piano and was organist in a small town in southern Germany.
Music was the "religion" in our family and all adults greatly encouraged us children to play an instrument or to study music.
I initially received flute lessons, later singing and piano lessons.
After finishing school, I studied musicology, education and German literature at various universities. In 1986 I received my doctorate in German Literature from the University of Bremen, and over the years I have received additional degrees in Prehistory and Theology.
During my studies I taught the playing of all types of recorders for many years, as well as rhythmic-musical early education at various youth music schools.
Passion drew me to Switzerland, where I took singing, composition and organ lessons I was a member of a chorale cola and sang in a chamber choir, a small opera choir ensemble and the St. Gallen Cathedral Choir.
The first of my larger compositions have been published by "Müller & Schade" in Bern from 2011:
- Missa islamica (a crossover composition)
- Benedict of Nursia (oratorio)
This was followed by 2014 - 2018
- Stabat Mater
- Credo
- pater noster
- Catenae Galli (oratorio)
- a 7 part Magnificat
and
- the cycle "Dominus non sum dignus"
will follow shortly.
Smaller works for organ, piano, choirs of various sizes and instrumentation have been performed in various contexts over the past years.
So for example
- "The Spirit of the Lord", Pentecost song for 4 part choir and organ
World premiere October 2015, Oberägeri
or during a service in November 2015 phrases from my
- Eragon Organ Suite
April 2016, the jury of the "Klangundgloria" competition, Zurich
works submitted by me out of competition with the following words:
"Although it was clear from the formal aspect that we could not consider your submissions, the members looked at your works in preparation for the session and I am happy to inform you that in both works your sense of choral tonality was highly praised. It was also unanimously noted that especially ''Holz auf Jesu Schulter'' could also be performed effectively by simpler choirs (which cannot be said of much contemporary music in the field of serious music)".
November 2016 the commissioned composition
- "Dignity between Heaven and Earth" for 8 part choir (optional four part choir and piano)
premiered by the a-capella ensemble "cantamo" in Cologne, Germany.
November 2019 saw the first performance
- "Esurientes implevit bonis", the fifth movement from my 7 part
"Magnificat" (as four part choir with string accompaniment)
by the "Kammerchor Will" in Baden and Wil, Germany.
Currently I am working on my fourth oratorio: "Hesekiel me-too''

At the age of 7 I received almost 10 years of classical piano lessons and sang in the school choir. After school, I studied teaching (sports, geography) and worked with children and teenagers in various fields (school, training center, educational institution). So I didn't have the time to study music professionally. But music is my constant companion (playing the piano, organ, smaller compositions). I have enjoyed short term voluntary musical activities with children (ensemble, piano, organ).

My name is Toni Schmidt.
I am studying music to become a teacher at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) and I am passionately interested in music education beyond my studies. Many seminars and workshops have also brought me closer to the ''Orff Schulwerk'' and the associated methodology. Since then I have been fascinated by the working methods and didactic components of Orff's compositions.
I have been teaching music at a primary school for a number of years now, using Orff instruments in a variety of ways. For me, the development of a listening repertoire and the practical learning of musical structures and facts play an essential role. That is why I also use relative solmization in teaching in many different ways.
In addition, I lead a professional children's and youth choir in Berlin which regularly presents larger concert programs.
Teaching music and discovering music together is a wonderful job which inspires me anew every day. For this reason, it was a great concern of mine to arrange a setting which is especially intended for my children's and youth choir. Music pedagogical aspects are also included. The arrangement is thought out in a nuanced way and can be performed by children with different musical backgrounds on the Orff instruments.

This was the last time I was in the UK; I live in Bolnisi, Georgia; and am an English teacher (mainly online). On two occasions I have had musical 'retreats' - at Elpha Green Cottage, Northumberland, 2002 and 2003; when I also attended a Poulenc course at 'Jackdaws', Somerset; and at Oradea, Romania (using a fine restored Viennese piano from about 1890) where a musician's flat is located close to the centre of the historic town, just over the border from Hungary, where I served as a teacher, 2016-2017. Have composed over 100 songs, some choral works; and am particularly interested in works for piano, voice and instruments, of which I have written a few. I am happy that my Orff Competition entry has its roots in London the age of Dussek, or thereabouts.

My roots are in classical music, but since about 6-7 years I have been very interested in folk music. I play piano, but harmonium as well, also Finnish national instrument kantele (different sizes) and violin.
I work at school as a pianist and have attended once an Orff Pedagogy Course in Germany. Suddenly I remembered those nice days full of music when I found an advertisement of this competition in internet!
For me folk music has opened the way to improvisation and composing. I have tried to make different compositions from short pieces for solo piano and harmonium to some songs and pieces and arrangements for folk band or violin group.
With Cuckoo Clock I send my best greetings to all of you from Finland!
