When the invitation to the Carl Orff Composition Competition 2019 / 2020 arrived, I had been thinking for weeks about writing a composition that would create a connection between the theme of the "Lamento" by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and the song "Ich sing dir mein Lied" with the sweeping Brazilian melody and the beautiful German lyrics by Fritz Baltruweit and Barbara Hustedt.
So the invitation to combine a children's song - sung by a children's choir - and a string quintet came to me as if it were the right thing to do.
The lament - played by the quintet - symbolizes the world of adults with their knowledge, concerns and fears, the song the world of children with their joy of life and creativity.
