The text of the German folk song "Die Gedanken sind frei" was first published on leaflets around 1780. Between 1810 and 1820 the melody was written. In 1842 the song was published in the collection "Schlesische Volkslieder" by Hoffmann von Fallersleben and Ernst Richter. The content is still of constant topicality today.
