Scenic song for baritone with hand drum and piano -
ABBREVIATED INSTRUCTIONS FOR DIRECTING
On stage:
On the left side the grand piano, in the middle a stool, in front of it a simple metal music stand with an open book; next to the stool there is a hand drum.
The piano player is already sitting.
The singer enters the podium and sits on the stool, his back facing the auditorium. The pianist begins to play, the singer hums the Orpheus vocals in a very delicate (but clearly audible) way. Then he reaches for the drum and begins to gently beat the drum with his hand, puts it aside again, walks around the stool, takes the book and after the new piano impulse begins to interpret the text in reverse - sometimes standing, sometimes sitting.
During the short piano intermezzos (bars 90 - 101) the book is put back on the stand, the singer slowly turns away from the listeners and starts to hum in the falsetto again. After the suddenly loud piano stop (bar 115) he jumps up, immediately returns to normal voice while at the same time abruptly turning around and speaking to the audience with his excited singing - now without a book and standing all the way through as if ''his'' mythical story had just become a hard reality.
After all this he takes up the playing with the drum again while sitting and while remaining facing the Auditorium. As soon as he has put it on the floor he quietly steps off the stage.
