Orpheus discovers the dead mistress, screams shockingly, breaks down, receives the message from Cupid that there is a possibility of salvation.
But when he realizes that Eurydice no longer wants redemption at all, resulting from fear he remains breathless, and only slowly does he find the strength to tell the whole story in one song.
My old fascination for the prelude BWV 999 of J. S. Bach is undiminished. I found it very fitting as a background for this tragic story.
