“She was”. By emphasizing this motto already at the outset, which is characterized by a falling third, leaving the underworld seems futile. The ascending sounds coming from the lute of Orpheus will not change their destiny. The sad and dramatic exclamation of God Hermes about Orpheus' failure “He has turned around” do not even seem necessary since Eurydice is already too much enrooted with the world of the shadows and has become prey of oblivion. At the end Orpheus’ lute melody mounts once more in slow motion and descends immediately afterwards. The two final tones may represent the God’s resignation or also Euridyce’s apathy who is no longer concerned and has already merged into the autumn of oblivion.
