Günter Sopper Günter Sopper: "Leuchtzeichen" - Diabelli-Contest 2014

« Back ⇧List⇧ Next »
The work makes reference to the three elements from the contest: War and Peace, the Morse code characters for a Greek word and the Diabelle Variations. Within the 5 variations, which yet again contain to some extent sub-variations, the peace theme represented as “hope” “yearning for peace” and “benediction” gradually develops itself from the harsh war and post-war rhythms melodically and harmoniously.
The title of the 1st movement is a variation of the beginning of the famous poem by Georg Heym “The War”,
namely the denial – he didn't sleep long after the First World War. From the harmonic tones at the beginning, the Ostinato develops itself harmoniously and rhythmically. At its conclusion is the relentless machine gun fire.
The inner structure of the work is a metamorphosis of the Morse code rhythm, which in the 3rd movement is introduced for the first time as a melody and corresponds to the word IRINI – the same tones for the same letters. (In the previous movement it is only a descending scale.) In the bass Ostinato, the rhythm sounds simultaneously twice as fast as in the melody!
The next movement is a reverence to Greek music with its 13/8 time, although the IRINI theme of the previous movement is melodically extended; the progression upwards and even more, the range between minor and major expresses yearning. The middle part with its Fugato brings virtually the heavenly vision with which in the 3rd part a deep bass brings it back to ground level. Both of the last two chords still emphasize the change from minor to major.
The last movement incorporates the simple IRINI theme from the third movement, thereafter somewhat fractured – uncertainty arises, whether peace will be maintained – and then as an “illuminated signal” for a better world, in a manner of speaking, the trusted affirmation.
he spiritual connection between all of the movements (I call them here “movements” as almost all of the variations contain sub-variations, especially and clearly e.g. the Fugato in the 4th movement) is the triumph over the suffering created by the war. Although the 2nd movement is a limp tango which alters between 3/8 and 5/16 time. The melody which also corresponds exactly to the Morse code, flows out as if tumbling into the abyss.
