Isaac Lovdahl Isaac Lovdahl: Diabelli-Contest 2016

« Back ⇧List⇧ Next »
Inspired by Orff's setting of the same text, I chose to incorporate sections of chant into this piece. There are moments of aleatory that dwell underneath the chant, and allow for some colorful and rich performance opportunities. I utilized the German and English source texts, hoping to bring to the foreground the universal message and beauty of the prayer.

One Latin phrase is repeated throughout the course of the work: "Sanctus Deus"--the choir repeatedly hearkens back to the "Sanctus Deus" text and its musical theme as a way of always remembering the merciful sovereignty of God in the midst of turmoil.
