Alice Mentzer Alice Mentzer: Diabelli-Contest 2016

« Back ⇧List⇧ Next »
Wessobrunn Prayer. Music composed for the Diabelli competition 2016. Four part SATB choir, A cappella . Difficulty level: easy-medium.
The piece opens with a loud "Ooo", then fades to near silence. An 'out of the desert' chant follows "This I learnt". Vibrant notes sound as the bass/treble voices intermingle with Soprano/Alto, All weave in and out with each other, singing the Wessobrunn words about beginnings. "no trees, no mountains, no stars".

All four voices strongly confirm their understanding of this momentous event with the cry "no stars at all" Seeing such bleak emptiness, the sopranos begin a lament . Bass and altos reply with the memorable passage "nothing, nothing, nothing". The entire SATB community joins in the wail. Suddenly, all stops. With hushed reverence, voices rise to glorious joy as the choir sings "there was the One Almighty God, ending in triumphant elation.

The music for this competition was sung by the Select Choir of Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Music, directed by Timothy Hsu, Ph.D. These remarkable musicians first saw the music only an hour before recording.
