Michael Burger: Diabelli-Contest 2016

First of all many warm thanks to all listeners, I very much appreciate that! Below the listing of the used words you may find an english version of the following description (many thanks to Peter Hintz for his support!)

Titel:"NE FINIS NE LIMES ET SANCTUS DEUS" - eine mögliche Essenz des Gebetes: Nichts war, außer Gott.
Das 3- bis 7-stimmige Stück ist eine mehrfache Variation ein und desselben 8-taktigen Themas durch verschiedene stimmlich-stilistische Kombinationen und durch mehrere der vorgegebenen Sprachen, die teilweise auch nebeneinander auftauchen. Das Stück ist gefühlt eigentlich in 3/4, wurde aber wegen m.E. besserer Übersichtlichkeit in 6/4 verfasst.Teil A beginnt auf Spanisch mit dem Schluss des vorgegebenen Textes: gemeint ist Gott als Anfang und Ende, alpha und omega, intoniert mittels der mittelstimmig parallel klingenden Vokale a und o der ersten Takte. Nach kurzer "Bestätigung" in Latein und Althochdeutsch folgt 3-stimmig auf Neuhochdeutsch mit Begleitung in Englisch die Vorstellung des tonalen Grund-Themas anhand der ersten 5 Gebets-Zeilen. Mit Teil C beginnt komplett auf Englisch ein mehr hymnischer Teil, der die letzten 4 Zeilen bis fast zum Ende vertont und die kommenden kanonischen Variationen schon andeutet. Danach folgt, textlich wiederholend, ab D eine Nebeneinanderstellung von naheliegend auf Althochdeutsch mönch-ähnlich gemurmeltem (dicht gesetzt und monoton) Männerstimmen-Gebet, und kanonischen Frauenstimmen in spanischer Sprache, wie ein sehr schlichter und langsamer Vals. Nach einem kurzen wiederum kanonischen Zwischenthema (E) folgt der stilistisch und textlich an Teil C anknüpfende kurze feierliche Schlussteil F, in dem wie zu Beginn "Gott, der Heilige" sprachlich gemischt intoniert wird.
Leider war es aus zeitlichen Gründen nicht mehr möglich, das Stück live einzusingen, daher erklingen als MP3 die "Stimmen" des CoolVirtualSynth...
Noch eine Aufführungsanweisung:
Der Chor sollte möglichst (je nach Raum und Sängerzahl) aufgereiht oder in Blöcken nach Art eines Doppelchores S1 A1 T1 B1 B2 T2 A2 S2 aufgestellt sein. Länge des Stückes ca. 4:05 Min. Herzlichen Dank an "Pärt-Punk" Piet van Helst für die Hilfe mit forte7 :-)

English version:
Title:“NE FINIS NE LIMES ET SANCTUS DEUS“- a possible essence of the prayer:
Nothing was except God.
This piece for 3 to 7 voices consists of variations on an 8-bar theme in different vocal and stilistic combinations in part using two of the given languages at the same time.
Actually, the piece itself has more of a 3/4-feel, but I preferred to put it in 6/4 for better clarity.
Part A begins in Spanish with the last words of the proposed text, which means God as the beginning and the end simultaneously, alpha and omega, sounding with the vowels „a“ and „o“ in the middle voices during the first bars.
After a short „affirmation“ in Latin and Old High German, part B introduces the basic melody set to 3 alternating voices (the prayer’s first 5 lines in German accompanied with English).
The more hymn-like part C (entirely in English) treats the next 4 lines almost until the end, foreshadowing the following canon-like variations.
The same words repeated in a murmuring monk’s prayer-like way, to be sung monotonously by tightly set male voices in Old High German, accompany a canon of the melody set to female voices in Spanish (part D), possibly reminiscent of a slow and simple tango in 3/4.
After the interlude-theme E, again a short canon of various voices, the piece comes to its solemn ending through part F, which completes part C stylistically and lyrically, using „God is holy“ as at the very beginning but mixed in language.
Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time left for a live-recording, so the MP3-file sounds only with the „voices“ of the CoolVirtualSynth…
Acoustical and personal aspects considered, the performing choir should be positioned as closely as possible to a double-choir: S1 A1 T1 B1 B2 T2 A2 S2. (approx. length 4:05min)
