I wanted to reflect the melancholy nature of the story with plaintive, ethereal and flowing melody and harmony, inspired by impressionism.
The mood is reflective and thoughtful, setting the scene but becoming more tragic as the voice soars into the high range and then drifts away, Eurydice crying out to her lost love.
The frame drum is a soft accompaniment, a distant reminder of her fate reminiscent of guards escorting her back to the Underworld.
The rhythm is a variation on Monterverdi's rhythm in Orfeo.
