Ryan Johnson Ryan Johnson: Carl Orff Competition 2018 Orpheus.Eurydice.Hermes

« Atrás ⇧Lista⇧ Continuar »
This is exactly what I love about competitions. Baritone, harp, and frame drum wouldn't be a combination I would normally write for, but I love jumping into the challenge.

The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, the inspirational sculptures by Tesche-Mentzen, and most importantly, Rilke's unique telling of the story combine to reveal a sense of surreal mysticism rooted in potential danger. His words at times seem as unsteady as Eurydice's pathway out of the underworld. The fact that he shifts the traditional narrative to focus on Eurydice, to tell her inner story where she requires no man to rescue her, is a bold narrative move. In death, she has been liberated.

I wanted to convey an ancient air unbound by any specific culture. With the shifting time signatures, I hope to keep the listener just off-balance until the moment of Eurydice's declaration.
